FT-IR study of the infusion of C. barbatus Benth and C. Citratus Stapf medicinal plants

The use of plants for medicinal purposes has been a practice since ancient times. Even with the development of synthetic drugs, the interest in medicinal plants for therapeutics is still in evidence, given the vast potential from these resources. In this context, infrared spectroscopy by Fourier transform (FT-IR) was used in this study to identify the presence of bioactive compounds in infusions of the medicinal plants Coleus barbatus Benth and Cymbopogon citratus Stapf. The results suggest the presence of flavonoids in the analyzed infusions, an essential group of polyphenols with antioxidant properties reported in the literature.
